In a surprising new move the Nigeria Police has launched a new TV ad spot to boost its public Image. The Police ad is fronted by popular ,youthful Nigerian pop singer, Korede Bello of the hit tune ’God Win’ fame.
The singer voices the well-worn saying, ’ the Police is your friend and it there to serve you’
But clearly, the credibility of this message is in question given the long standing negative public perception of the agency by Nigerians. Although the current Inspector general, Solomon Arase appears to have done a lot to improve the public perception of the Nigeria Police through his advocacy of strict adherence to the rule of law and regulations of the Police by his men, altering public perception that has been formed over time, will take quite a while.
For Arase, sticking to his pledge to dismantle police roadblocks, which Nigerians consider to be typically, bribe-collection points, has helped to improve the agency’s image in recent months. Arase had also directed his men to end their intervention in purely civil matters, especially business transactions, where dissatisfied parties usually ‘use’ the Police to harass and intimidate other parties.
The new Police publicity efforts is aired on national TV channels such as the NTA network and Channels TV.
